Structure and Location
The liver is the largest internal organ of human body with an approximate weight ranging between 1.2–1.5 kilograms in adults. It is located in the upper right side of the abdomen beneath the diaphragm. The liver is divided into two main lobes and is connected to the gallbladder, pancreas and intestines through the bile ducts and blood vessels.
Functions of the Liver
The liver is not a single-function organ; it performs more than 500 essential tasks which are grouped broadly as follows:
Metabolism of Nutrients
1.Liver converts the carbohydrates into glucose for energy and stores excess as glycogen.
2.It breaks down the proteins into amino acids and detoxifies ammonia into urea.
3.It processes the fats and produces cholesterol and triglycerides.
Detoxification
1.The liver neutralizes toxins from food, alcohol, medications and environmental pollutants.
2.It also filters and removes harmful substances from the blood.
Bile Production
1.The function of the liver is to produces bile juice to aid digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Storage of Vitamins and Minerals
1.The liver stores the essential nutrients such as iron, copper, and vitamins A, D, E, and B12.
Blood Regulation
1.It maintains the blood clotting factors and regulates blood volume.
2.It also filters old and damaged red blood cells.
Immune Defense

Importance for Health
The liver’s role is central to life and human health. Without a functioning liver, survival is impossible, even for a few days. It works silently and without pain signals in early stages of disease. This indicates that the damage caused by the diseases often remains unnoticed until the advanced stages. A healthy liver ensures:
1.Proper digestion and energy balance.
2.Effective detoxification of harmful agents.
3.Strong immunity and disease resistance.
4.Hormonal balance and mental well-being.
Why the Liver Is Becoming More Disease-Prone Today
The modern lifestyle and environmental conditions have created a perfect storm for liver disorders. The major factors which are contributing to poor liver health includes the following:
1. Poor Diet and Obesity
High consumption of refined sugars, processed foods and saturated fats leads to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).NAFLD now affects over 30% of adults worldwide, making it the most common chronic liver condition.
2. Alcohol Abuse
Chronic excessive drinking leads to alcoholic fatty liver, hepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis.
3. Viral Infections
Hepatitis B and C infections remain major causes of chronic liver disease and liver cancer.
4. Overuse of Medications and Supplements
Self-medication with painkillers, antibiotics, or herbal supplements can cause drug-induced liver injury.
5. Environmental Pollutants and Toxins
Pesticides, industrial chemicals and contaminated water increase toxic load on the liver.
6. Sedentary Lifestyle
Lack of physical activity worsens insulin resistance and fat accumulation in the liver.
7. Stress and Sleep Deprivation
Chronic stress and poor sleep disturb hormonal regulation, indirectly burdening liver metabolism.
Major Liver Diseases in the Current Era
1.Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and its severe form, NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis)
2.Alcoholic Liver Disease
3.Viral Hepatitis (B and C)
4.Liver Cirrhosis
5.Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Liver Cancer)
Prevention and Liver Health Maintenance

7. Regular Check-ups – Liver function tests (LFTs) for early detection in high-risk individuals.
The liver is a tireless worker which keeps on working silently and it also ensures the body runs smoothly. In the modern world of sedentary lifestyles the liver is facing unprecedented challenges. Awareness, prevention and early detection of the liver diseases with proper medical care are the keys to safeguarding liver health.
