Birmingham (Samaj Weekly)- I have just learned that our venerable L.R Balley has passed away. My heart is broken. I have known my uncle for all of my life. Without doubt he is the best revolutionary I have ever known. His last visit was some years ago. He led the Ambedkar meeting here in Birmingham.
He told me that the Canadian government bestowed an honour upon him for the many years of Activism he was committed to. L.R. Balley was a Writer, Activist, Journalist and Editor. He was influential.
He told me on his visit here that Arundhati Roy had visited his office in Jallandhar to pick up a copy of ‘The Annihilation of Caste’. Which was republished by her.
I think his death marks an end to an era. Its because throughout his life he was very much a lone voice in the emancipation of the Untouchables. Now our people are more vocal. We are trying to gain more power in society and in politics. Hopefully we are making waves to change the world society not just India.
My condolences to L.R. Balley’s family.
Jai Bheem
