Geopolitics
On 31st July 2025, President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods and launched verbal attacks on India’s economy, calling it “dead.” Within hours of these actions, Trump announced plans to help Pakistan develop its oil reserves for potential export to India. This sequence of events represents a clear attempt at economic blackmail and geopolitical manipulation. However, India’s response should be one of dignified resistance rather than submission to such provocative tactics.
These taunts by Trump comes after a failure of Trade deal between US and India. Tensions have been rising as India did not yield to pressure tactics to sign Trade deal.
Trump’s Strategy of Economic Intimidation
President Trump’s approach toward India demonstrates a calculated strategy of pressure and humiliation. The 25% tariff imposed on August 1, 2025, as punishment for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil despite the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Trump wants to punish India but it’s to okay for its European partners to buy Russian oil and gas.
China buys Russian oil but there are no threats or intimidation.
The president’s decision to publicly disparage India’s economy as “dead” while at the same time announcing energy partnerships with Pakistan reveals the true nature of his strategy. This is not merely about trade but about forcing India into submission through a combination of economic penalties and public humiliation. The Pakistan oil announcement serves as a particularly cynical move, essentially telling India: “If you won’t comply, we’ll empower your regional rival to supply your energy needs.”
India’s Economic Reality vs. Trump’s Claims
Trump calling India as having a “dead” economy contradicts economic data. India has recently surpassed Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, with a GDP of $4.19 trillion in 2025. More significantly, India’s projected growth rate of 6.4% for both 2025 and 2026 far exceeds the United States’ expected growth of 1.9% and 2% respectively.
This economic strength provides India with the foundation to resist American pressure tactics. India experiencing good growth is hardly in a position to bow to external threats. The disconnect between Trump’s rhetoric and economic reality suggests his comments are designed more for domestic American consumption than accurate assessment of India’s situation.
The Importance of Maintaining Dignity
Nations, must maintain their dignity in international relations. India’s decision to continue purchasing Russian oil, while controversial in Western capitals, represents a sovereign choice based on national interests rather than submission to foreign pressure. Energy security is a fundamental requirement for any developing economy, and India’s approach to securing energy sources demonstrates responsible governance rather than defiance.
Trump is a bully and a submission would not only damage India’s international standing but would encourage further aggressive behaviour from the United States toward other nations.
Strategic Alternatives and Long-term Thinking
Rather than bowing to pressure, India should pursue strategic alternatives that strengthen its position. The country’s large domestic market, growing technological capabilities, and increasing global influence provide multiple options for reducing dependence on any single partner. Diversifying trade relationships, strengthening ties with other major economies, and continuing to develop domestic industries represent more sustainable approaches than submission to American demands.
Conclusion
India’s response to Trump’s provocative tactics should be measured, dignified, and focused on long-term national interests rather than short-term appeasement. India has strong economy with growing global influence, and strategic importance to weather temporary pressure from the United States.
History shows that United States cannot be trusted. It has always sided with Pakistan, this was clearly evident during 1971 Indo- Pak war.
India’s refusal to bow to Trump’s taunts is not merely about pride but about establishing the principle that sovereign nations cannot be blackmailed through threats and public humiliation.
The path forward requires careful diplomacy, strategic patience, and continued focus on building India’s economic and political strength.
