The Sikh Council UK (est. 2010) strongly condemns the violence against children, women and the elderly who were exercising their democratic right to peaceful protests against the three farming laws that are considered as being potentially exploitative and harmful to the farmers and the agricultural heritage of India.
Use of excessive force is clearly in breach of people’s human rights and a sign of desperation by the dictatorial government. The Council also condemns the use of jammers at many protesting sites resulting in people not being able to coordinate and
communicate with families left behind. The impact on medical staff, ambulances and volunteers is most alarming. All these are hall marks of a police state which is motivated towards controlling people and preventing lawful dissent.
Cllr Gurdial Singh Atwal; the Chairperson of the Indian Subcontinent Affairs Committee said he is shocked by the images of violence against innocent citizens exercising their right to protest. He further added that the diaspora Panjabi and large sections of the Indian community stands firmly with the farmers as demonstrated by record numbers participating in the kissan rallies held in major cities of the world including London and Leicester. Further demonstrations and rallies are planned in Birmingham this week which are also expected to draw record numbers as a sign of solidarity against Mr Modi’s government.
