Three surmises about why Arun Goel resigned from his post as EC

(Samaj Weekly)- 1. For the past several Lok Sabha elections, the announcement was usually done by ECI in the 1st week of March, between March 1 and 5. This time, it has been delayed indefinitely because SL wants to inaugurate a slew of projects and tie up alliances. It is probable that Arun Goel thought that delaying the election announcement any further would finish off what little credibility the ECI was left with.

2. SL and AS may have instructed the ECI to take action to freeze the symbols of those parties which do not agree to an alliance with the BJP on its terms. ECI’s action of issuing a notice to the AIADMK and reopening a settled issue is a case in point. It is possible that Arun Goel was not prepared to stoop this low. CEC Rajiv Kumar seems ready to even lick the arses of his bosses.

3. The ECI already has details of electoral bonds received by various political parties furnished in a sealed envelope by SBI based on past orders of the Supreme Court. There could have been a difference of opinion between the CEC and Arun Goel about making this public. Less likely though.

Arun Goel may have felt that he had landed in a hot seat and would be expected to do more and more partisan and illegal things, as EC and later as CEC. Whatever his track record, we must appreciate and admire a guy who resigns on principle.
