PENN COUNCILLOR HITS OUT AT PLAN TO BUILD ON GREENBELT

Councillor Paul Singh

A Conservative councillor in Penn has hit out at plans for more than 1,000 houses to be built on greenbelt land in the city.

Cllr Paul Singh has discovered that the land, which includes the Colton Hills School Playing Field in Goldthorn Park, was put forward for development by Wolverhampton Council as part of the Black Country Core Strategy. Up to 1,300 homes could now be built there by private developers, affecting thousands of residents.

A public meeting was held last night (10 September) at Lakshmi’s Sweet Shop on Dudley Road, where residents voiced their concerns about the impact such a large development would have on the community.

Cllr Singh said: “When there are so many brownfield sites in Wolverhampton, it’s outrageous that Labour councillors are releasing greenbelt land for large-scale housing development.

“This will have a massive impact on my residents in Penn. 1,300 houses basically means another 2,500 cars on the road – how is that helping the environment? What about the extra school places that will be needed? Will GP surgeries be able to cope with the huge increase in patients? These are all questions that so far Labour has failed to answer.

“Conservative councillors in Wolverhampton will not support building on our precious greenbelt. We want to see brownfield land built on first.”
