Amritsar,{Tarlochan Singh Virk. 26/01/2023} Baba Deep Singh Ji was born into a Sandhu Jat Sikh family on 26 January1682. He lived in village Pahuwind, Tarn Taran in district Amritsar, Punjab, India. Tarn Taran Sahib is a prominent Sikh Shrine located in the central part of the city. Baba Deep Singh was present when the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa Panth at Anand Pur Sahib in 1699. He was a great saint and soldier whose Khanda { double edged sword} weighed 15 kg or 32 lb.
Baba Deep Singh Ji was the most famed Nihang {Sikh Warrior}who spent most of his life fighting the Afghans. Nihangs always carried a dagger, wore blue coloured clothes, and when in full replica carried one or two swords . They were known for their ability to take on much larger armies and still emerge victoriously. Baba Deep Singh attained martyrdom at Sri Harmandar Sahib {Golden Temple} on 13 November 1757. Baba Deep Singh’s martyrdom helped to inspire the Sikhs and Nihangs who drove out the Afghans. The spot where he attained martyrdom stands a shrine and Sikhs regularly pay their respects there.
Baba Deep Singh Ji was the first leader of Damdami Taksal, appointed by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Damdama Sahib is the 4th Sikh Takhat where Guru Gobind Singh Ji prepared the full version of Sikh Scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib in1705. Damdami Taksal is an orthodox Sikh cultural and educational organisation in Northern Indian state of Punjab. It was founded by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
To celebrate the birth of Baba Deep Singh, Sri Akhand Pathh, three days of continuous reading of the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib will commence at Gurdwara Sahib, 51 Meynell Road, Leicester LE5 3NE on Friday 27th January at 11 am and will be completed on Sunday 29th January at 11 am. Sri Akhand Pathh Sahib will be performed as per the code of conduct set up by Guru Gobind Singh. Twenty-five baptised Amritdhari Gursikhs. will take part in Sri Akhand Pathh Sewa.
Amrit Sanchar {Baptism Ceremony} will take place at the same Gurdwara Sahib on Meynell Road at 1.00pm. This auspicious occasion is open to to all from near and far. We therefore invite all Sangat with folded hands to come and pay Homage to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and commemorate the birth of Baba Deep Singh. The 25 Singhs Akhand Pathh has been an annual event and this being the 3rd Annual Akhand Pathh organised with the support of Management, and Trustees of the Gurdwara Sahib and Sangat, members of the congregation.
