SAMAJ WEEKLY UK
Leicester, UK – The Indian Workers Association Great Britain (IWAGB), led by General Secretary Sital Singh Gill, recently engaged with Malwinder Singh Kang MP, a key Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson from Punjab, during his visit to Leicester.
In the meeting, Mr. Gill presented MP Kang with a symbolic image of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, emblematic of justice and sacrifice, setting the tone for a candid discussion on pressing concerns impacting the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community.
Key Issues Highlighted:
Illegal Seizure of NRI Properties: Mr. Gill brought attention to alarming reports of unlawful confiscation of properties owned by NRIs in Punjab, often linked to local political figures and authorities. This has instilled fear among NRIs considering visits or retirement in India, with many legal disputes still unresolved.
Exploitation by Fraudulent Visa Agents: Thousands of young Punjabis are being defrauded by agents who promise UK visas through false documents and bogus job offers, particularly under Student, Tier 2, and Tier 5 visa categories. These agents reportedly charge exorbitant fees exceeding 30-35 lakh rupees. Many migrants arrive to find no job opportunities and face harsh conditions, relying on charitable support, including daily food provided by local Gurdwaras.
Detention of Political Prisoners Beyond Sentences: The delegation expressed grave concerns over political prisoners remaining incarcerated after completing their sentences, highlighting this as a violation of human rights and calling for immediate government intervention.
MP Malwinder Singh Kang acknowledged these urgent issues and assured he would raise them with Punjab’s Chief Minister and in the Indian Parliament. He committed to pushing for stricter actions against fraudulent agents and advocating for the release of political prisoners who have already served their terms. Furthermore, he promised to coordinate with both Punjab’s state and Central governments to pursue effective solutions.
The IWAGB reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to championing the rights and welfare of the NRI community and continuing its struggle for justice and public service in India.
