(Samaj Weekly)- We are pleased to share the successful initiative of the Tamil Buddhist Council during a historic event at Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS), Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event was organized and hosted by Baudhaloka Foundation under the esteemed leadership of Mr. Jagath Sumathipala who was the president of the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress (ACBC) and is also the vice-president of World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB).
The historic event covered a symposium of Buddhist Heritage of Kurundi and Buddhism in South India, “Kurundaloka Ceremony”, Buddhist pilgrimage visits, Kurundiloka Archaeological site study tour, and deliberation between the Tamil Buddhist Council and Baudhaloka Foundation. Tamil Buddhist Council (TBC) is inspired by the vision of Bodhisatva Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideal society, and Bhante Urgyen Sangharakshita’s spiritual fellowship. TBC believes in strengthening the relationship between the Tamil ethnic communities and Sinhalese communities through Buddhist fellowship. For the same, a 6 years Road Map was developed between TBC and Baudhaloka Foundation.
The event was illuminated by the presence of eminent personalities such as Mr. Maithripala Sirisena (former President of Sri Lanka), Most Ven. Bodagama Chandima Thero (Advisor of International Religious and Cultural Affairs to the President of Sri Lanka), Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero (Member of Parliament), Dr. Suren Raghavan (State Minister for Higher Education) and several reputed leaders and delegates who were part of this historic event.
This noble partnership between the Sinhala Buddhist-Tamil Buddhist is an ongoing process which evolved during the course of time under motivation and guidance of International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB), and with the help of dynamic Buddhist leaders like Most Venerable Omalpe Sobita Thero, Dr. Joana Macy, Rev. Alan Senauke, and Mr. Harsha Navaratne.
