New Delhi, Women leaders across the country have applauded the judiciary over Kuldeep Sengar’s conviction on Monday. The expelled BJP lawmaker was convicted in the notorious ‘Unnao Rape case’ by a Delhi court.
Speaking with IANS, Shiv Sena leader Priayanka Chaturvedi said, “I would like to call his conviction as the victory of the judicial system. The decision by the court has shown to the people that those who are in a position of power can run but can’t hide from the consequences of their depravity and crime.”
Reacting to the news, CPI leader Brinda Karat said, “His conviction was expected. But the question is why the party he belongs to allows him to continue as MLA,” she said.
Applauding the judiciary, Karat accused the ruling party of defending and protecting Sengar.
“His conviction has come in spite of efforts by the ruling party to defend and protect him. In this case, it was the courage of the victim and the support she got from her family to stand against such a powerful person, who used all his might to eliminate the victim,” she said.
Speaking to IANS, NCW chief Rekha Sharma said, “We always know that the judiciary will take the proper decision, but it is not only that, it delays the procedure but this time I think that they have taken the right decision at the right time and I welcome it.”
Earlier in the day, Union Minister Smriti Irani took to Twitter to convey her gratitude to the judiciary.
Replying to a tweet, in which Smriti was asked to react to the conviction, she said without naming Sengar: “To presume that I would stand by anyone irrespective of their politics on issues of rape is abhorrent. The law has taken its course and I’m grateful that judicial processes continue to ensure protection of women & children.”
