On (Samajweekly) a major military offensive involving the governments of the United States and Israel against Iran marked a dangerous escalation in Middle Eastern tensions. Within days, hundreds were reported killed and thousands injured, including civilians whose lives were shattered in an instant. The consequences are already being felt across the region and throughout an interconnected world.
The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain) strongly condemns this war and the course pursued by the present political leadership of the United States and Israel. At a time when humanity faces economic instability, rising inequality, climate crisis and widespread social insecurity, the expansion of armed conflict is not only reckless — it is profoundly irresponsible.
History teaches us that wars launched in the name of security often create deeper insecurity. Military force may demonstrate power, but it rarely delivers lasting peace. Instead, it leaves behind destruction, displacement and long-term resentment. It is not political leaders who suffer most in such conflicts; it is ordinary working people, families, children and vulnerable communities who bear the heaviest cost.
There is also a wider and deeply troubling risk. Escalation in such a volatile region could draw in additional regional and global powers, increasing the possibility of a broader confrontation that no nation would be able to control. In a world armed with advanced weaponry and nuclear capabilities, miscalculation carries consequences of unimaginable scale.
Democratic governments have a particular responsibility to act with restraint and wisdom. If international law, sovereignty and human rights are to retain meaning, they must be upheld consistently. Security cannot be achieved through continuous escalation; it must be built through dialogue, diplomacy and lawful negotiation.
Sital Singh Gill, General Secretary, Indian Workers Association (Great Britain), states:
“The path of military escalation places our fragile world at serious risk. War does not strengthen democracy — it weakens global stability and human dignity. True leadership requires courage: the courage to step back, to engage in dialogue, and to prioritise peace over power. The people of every nation deserve security, opportunity, and hope — not fear and destruction.”
The way forward is clear: immediate de-escalation, a ceasefire, protection of civilians, and renewed diplomatic engagement through international frameworks. The international community must act responsibly to prevent further bloodshed and avoid a crisis that could spiral beyond control.
The world has already witnessed the devastation of global wars. It must not allow history to repeat itself.
