National Conference to be held in Delhi on 8 December
(Samajweekly) A meeting of the state’s social, political activists and organizations was organized by the All India Peoples Front (AIPF) at Gandhi Bhavan in Lucknow on 20/10/2024 regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on the sub-classification of SC-ST. It was accepted in the meeting that in fact the decision of the Supreme Court on August 1 to sub-classify Scheduled Castes and Tribes is against the thoughts of Dr. Ambedkar in its content. Dr. Ambedkar accepted Scheduled Castes as a unit so that a large part of the society could be raised as a political force in social change and their civil rights could be protected. It would be wrong to say that Dr. Ambedkar did not understand the phenomenon of classification within the Scheduled Castes. Dr. Ambedkar believed that social hierarchical inequality exists even among the Scheduled Castes, yet he never supported caste sub-classification. Dr. Ambedkar saw social rights and economic empowerment together. Therefore, he believed that the inequality that exists among the Scheduled Castes can be eliminated by giving special emphasis on their educational and economic empowerment.
Concern was expressed in the meeting that the decision taken by the BJP government to sub-classify the Scheduled Castes in Haryana without discussing it in Parliament is not correct. It was also noted with regret that the Telangana government has also banned recruitment there till December so that it can also give government jobs by classifying SCs.
It was agreed in the meeting that the role of Congress on sub-classification is also not correct and it should reconsider its decision. Also, taking Rs 100 crore from Adani for scholarship by the Telangana government will also weaken the ongoing fight against the racist BJP.
In the meeting, it was also appealed to Mayawati and other groups and Dalit thinkers that they should not take any such action which promotes political fragmentation among Dalit and Tribal groups. It was proposed in the meeting that discussion and extensive deliberation on the decision of the Supreme Court should be held in the upcoming winter session and if possible, a special session of Parliament should also be called on this question. An appeal was made to all the opposition parties including the Congress to put pressure on the Central Government on this decision and force it to call for a special session to hold a debate in the Parliament.
A National Conference of social, political activists, Dalit organizations, intellectuals about Supreme Court’s decision on SC-ST sub-classification is being organized in Delhi on 8 December 2024 in collaboration with AIPF and other organizations. It will also be addressed by eminent educationist and former UGC Chairman Professor Sukhdev Thorat. In the meeting, a state-level team was formed for its preparation and it was decided to run a campaign across the state.
