SL Army investigates man in uniform watching rioters

Shows a house damaged during the violent clashes in North Western Province, Sri Lanka. Over 60 people have been arrested over the violent clashes which erupted in Sri Lanka on Monday, the Police said in a statement Tuesday. A local radical group, named the National Thawheed Jammath, has been blamed for the attacks.

Colombo,  The Sri Lankan Army has launched an investigation after a man in uniform was seen in a footage watching rioters attacking Muslim-owned shops, homes and mosques during communal clashes earlier this week in the wake of the Easter suicide bombings.

The Army headquarters said that its attention was drawn to a video showing the man dressed in a uniform similar to that worn by the Army, watching as a group attacked property in Thummodara area of the North-Western Province, the Colombo Gazette reported on Wednesday.

The Army said the investigation was launched to identify the man and verify if he was a soldier.

Authorities said that if the man was confirmed to be a soldier then disciplinary action will be taken against him.

Sri Lanka has been on the edge since the April 21 attacks which killed over 250 people and injured hundreds.
