(SAMAJ WEEKLY)- SKM strongly protests the decision of NDA leadership to allocate the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to Shivaraj Singh Chouhan, responsible for the killing of 6 farmers of Mandsaur on 6th June 2017. The farmers were murdered while participating in the massive struggle for MSP@C2+50%, comprehensive loan waiver and against the growing trend of farmers’ suicide. The decision symbolizes arrogance and insensitivity exhibited by the former regimes of 2014 and 2019 with an absolute majority to BJP. It has aroused wrath among the farmers and the rural people across the country.
The first Cabinet meeting of the NDA Government did not take any decision to address the acute agrarian crisis and farmers’ suicide –31 farmers commits suicide daily across India- and to meet the long pending farmer’s demands of guaranteed MSP@C2+50%, comprehensive loan waiver, repeal of privatization of electricity, reduction in the cost of production and assured insurance and pension. The hype being created in the name of releasing Rs. 20000 crore of arrear in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which is an existing scheme with grossly inadequate sum of average Rs.500 per month per farmers’ household- will not satisfy farmers since it camouflage the unwillingness of the State to provide remunerative MSP and the policies of corporate takeover of agricultural sector.
These decisions exposed that the NDA and the BJP did not learn lessons from their defeat in 159 rural constituencies including the 60 seats out of 63 that were lost by BJP alone. There is no illusion among the farmers of a change in the corporate policies on agriculture. Farmers have to prepare for another stint of vibrant and massive struggles by joining hands with workers, small traders and petty producers and extending across India. The SKM is determined to build greater unity of the people and put pressure upon the NDA Government to replace its corporate driven policies with farmer and worker centric policies for the development of people.
In this context, the SKM has scheduled its General Body on 10th July 2024 at New Delhi to assess the post-election scenario. This meeting will be attended by the leaders of the constituent Kisan organisations of SKM from all over India.
The General Body will contemplate the future plan of action on the concrete demands including remunerative income, reduction in cost of production, freedom from indebtedness. Also to replace the policy of corporatisation of agriculture with a producer centric alternative policy of collective and cooperative farming, agro-based industrialization and marketing abetted by the Public Sector.
SKM while not justifying slapping of Kangana Ranaut MP by a women security personal flays her arrogant and malicious utterances against the historic farmers’ struggle.
An SKM delegation will visit families of Lakhimpur Kheri Martyrs on 13th June 2024 and will ensure continuation of legal assistance to those farmers wrongly implicated in the case by the BJP led state government as part of the incident.
