MPs to decide on abolition of discretionary quota for Kendriya Vidyalayas

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Minister of State for Education, Annapurna Devi, informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that abolishing the discretionary quota of MPs for admission to Kendriya Vidyalayas will be decided after consultation with members of all the political parties.

She also said that the ministerial quota for admission to the Kendriya Vidyalayas has been abolished and as far as the matter of MPs’ quota is concerned, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla has given an instruction to hold detailed discussion with all the leaders of different political parties on this issue before arriving at a decision.

Responding to a question raised by BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi, who said increasing the number of quota for admission will not help the situation, Devi said that this will be decided after discussion and as of now no decision has been taken to abolish the quota or to increase the number of quota for MPs with regard to admission to Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Earlier, Devi informed that in 2019-20, a total of 12,372 recommendations were made and out of these, 9,411 students were admitted to the Kendriya Vidyalayas under the Education Minister’s discretionary quotas.

Out of the 9,411 admissions, 955 Schedule Caste students, 135 Schedule Tribe students, and 1,946 Other Backward Class students were admitted, while the number of students belonging to the Economically Weaker Section was 128.

Similarly, in 2020-21, 16,752 recommendations were made from the Education Minister’s discretionary quota, and admissions were given to 12,295 students (1,105 SC, 157 ST, 294 OBC and 190 EWS).

The reply also said that the Minister of Education’s quota was abolished in 2021-22, therefore no recommendations were made for admission to the Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Devi also informed that the MPs have been provided with the discretionary quota of 10 admissions in the KVs of their constituency/state /Union Territory each year.
