Recently, an incident at Delhi’s Constitution Club sparked widespread discussion on social media. Senior Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan was present there when a man tried to take a selfie with her. In the viral video, she can be seen pushing the person away and saying, “Kya kar rahe hai aap? What is this?”
First of all, it was rude of the fan to take selfie without permission. Secondly, the behaviour of Jaya Bachchan was shocking, she angrily shoved him and scolded him. She should have handled it better, as a celebrity, politeness cost nothing. She could have asked not to take a selfie.
After the video went public, opinions were divided. Some people said that Jaya Bachchan’s behaviour was harsh and arrogant. Critics argue that, being famous and the wife of Amitabh Bachchan, she is often able to act this way without facing consequences, and people tolerate such behaviour.
Kangana Ranaut, herself an actress and MP, criticized Jaya publicly, “Most spoilt and privileged woman, people put up with her tantrums/non sense just because she is Amitabh Bachchan ji’s wife. That Samajwadi topi looks like a rooster comb, while she looks like a fighting cock!! Such disgrace and shame.”
Whilst I agree that she looked like a rooster with red topi. But Kangana Ranaut is being unfair as Jaya Bachchan was big star in the 1970s. She was bigger star than Amitabh Bachchan when she married him.
But this is not the first time Jaya Bachchan has publicly shown anger. She has previously scolded fans and media in a similar manner. Some view her actions as setting boundaries, while others see them as entitled and spoiled behaviour.
Fame and power comes with responsibility, and being a public figure means that every action is under scrutiny.
