Liam Byrne Statement on Commonwealth Games Legacy strategy

Liam Byrne MP

(Samajweekly) Commenting on the Commonwealth Games Legacy strategy published today, Shadow Mayor for the West Midlands, Liam Byrne MP said:

‘These Commonwealth Games will be the best Games ever. But we’ll be judged not just by the medals that we win but by the lives that we change. That’s why this Legacy plan is a welcome first step, but it needs to be far bigger, far bolder, and focused on improving local spaces in easy reach of all, young and old.

‘We should be bringing together a much wider chorus line of funders, like the Football Foundation, Premier League, Arts Council and others to create a one stop pot to fund pitches, floodlights, sports centres, arts, music, theatre and history in every corner of the region, not just the city centres.

‘And crucially, the jobs that we created must be guaranteed real living wage jobs. Ministers promised us they’d do the right thing when we pushed them on this in the Commons. Now, its time to turn promises into action’.
