Delhi: 2 killed as heavy rains lead to collapse of 15 houses

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A total of 15 houses collapsed in the national capital on Sunday due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to several others, an official said.

Atul Garg, chief of the Delhi Fire Services, said: “The first death was reported from Sundar Nagar, near the zoo. The second death occurred near St. Stephen’s Hospital.”

A senior police officer received a call reporting the collapse of a wall at the Veterinary Hospital near St. Stephen’s Hospital.

The call was made by one Neeraj Bhargav from the Government Veterinary Hospital.

“A woman and a minor girl were present there. Unfortunately, the dilapidated portion of a wall fell on them. Both were rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital and later transferred to Hindu Rao Hospital. The woman, Priti (30), was pronounced dead,” a police officer said.

The girl sustained minor bruises and was out of danger.

The Fire Department received numerous calls throughout the day on Sunday, reporting house collapses and waterlogging.
