A Political Analysis

For decades, the dispute over Kashmir has been a major focus of international politics. Historically, the Government of Pakistan actively encouraged the large Kashmiri community living in the United Kingdom to speak out. This British Kashmiri diaspora, mostly from the Mirpur region, became highly organized, using its political influence to lobby UK lawmakers and hold massive protests highlighting human rights concerns in Indian-administered Kashmir.

However, a major shift has occurred. Instead of targeting India, the British Kashmiri community has turned its powerful advocacy tools directly against Pakistan, creating a significant diplomatic embarrassment for Islamabad.

The spark for this change began with widespread local protests within Pakistan-administered Kashmir (often called Azad Jammu and Kashmir). What started as frustration over high electricity bills and the rising cost of flour quickly grew into a fight for basic political rights.
Local civil society groups, joined under the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), began demanding fair representation in upcoming regional elections. They protested against old laws that allow refugees living outside the area to hold legislative seats, a system locals say Pakistan’s ruling parties use to control the region.

The response from the Pakistani government was swift and severe. The state banned the JAAC under anti-terror laws, arrested civil society leaders, and shut down internet services. When paramilitary forces were brought in to stop the demonstrations, the situation turned violent. Security forces opened fire on peaceful sit-ins, resulting in over 30 civilian deaths and hundreds of injuries.

This heavy-handed crackdown immediately triggered a fierce backlash in the UK. Because an estimated 70% of British-Pakistanis have direct family ties to this specific region, the violence was not just distant news, it affected their families, friends, and ancestral homes. The internet blackouts and censorship could not hide the truth from a diaspora that is deeply connected to the ground.
As a result, the exact same political machinery that Pakistan helped build in the UK is now being used against it.

Thousands of British Kashmiris have marched through London, protesting outside the Pakistani High Commission. Furthermore, around 50 British Members of Parliament have signed letters demanding answers, and lawmakers have called for the UK government to challenge Pakistan over its actions.

Ultimately, this situation represents a massive strategic miscalculation for Islamabad. By fostering a vocal, politically active diaspora to champion human rights and self-determination on the world stage, Pakistan created a powerful tool for accountability. Now that internal governance issues have boiled over into violence, that very same community is holding Pakistan to the exact same global standards it spent decades defending.
