   (Samajweekly)   Global Warming has resulted in rise of earth’s temperature.The impact of this steep rise in temperature has enforced the air conditioning systems in becoming an essential luxury for homes, offices, and public Although these cooling systems are quite successful in providing relief from the intensi heat but at the significant environmental costs. The dual impacts of Air conditioning systems on environment and human health are beginning to attract attention from scientists and environment lovers.
IMPACT OF AIR CONDITIONERS ON ENVIRONMENT
Air conditioners are consuming the considerable amount of energy throughout the world and the demand for energy is increasing day by day.This increased demand for electricity often results in higher greenhouse gas emissions particularly in areas where fossil fuels are the primary energy souces.
According to SP Singh the Science Teacher and Researcher the electricity required to power the air conditioning systems immensely contributes in emissions of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases which contributes in global warming. With large number of people turning to air conditioning to cope with rising temperatures.Sooner or later it would be felt at large scale that increased number of users shifting to cooling systems would leads to more emissions of green house gases further exacerbating climate change.
In addition to their energy consumption air conditioners directly impacts the atmosphere through the release of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These chemicals, commonly used as refrigerants in cooling systems, are potent greenhouse gases—up to 1,430 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide .If the trend of upsurge in number of Air Conditioners continues then it is expected that additional 0.5 degrees Celsius rise in temperature. This could have dire consequences for ecosystems and human health leading to more frequent and severe heatwaves, droughts, and other climate-related disasters.
IMPACT OF AIR CONDITIONERS ON HUMAN HEALTH
Air conditioning (AC) systems can also have various impacts on human health, both positive and negative.
Positive Impacts
1. Heat Stroke Prevention: Air conditioning systems helps prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
2. Improved Air Quality: Many modern air conditioning systems are technologically equipped with filters to remove airborne pollutants, allergens, and particulate matter from indoor air. This can be beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies, as cleaner air can reduce symptoms and improve overall respiratory health.
3. Enhanced Sleep Quality: A cooler sleeping environment can improve sleep quality for patients and individuals suffering from sleep related problems. Air conditioning systems helps such people by promoting better rest and reducing night time awakenings.
Negative Impacts
1. Respiratory Issues: Poorly maintained air conditioning systems can become breeding grounds for mold, micro organism and dust mites. When these contaminants are circulated through the air they can exacerbate respiratory issues and allergies. Individuals with asthma or other lung conditions may experience worsened symptoms in environments with contaminated AC systems.
2. Dry Skin and Eyes: Air conditioning can lead to low humidity levels indoors resulting in dry skin, eyes and mucous membranes. This dryness can cause discomfort and increase the risk of respiratory infections as the body’s natural barriers become less effective.
3. Root cause of diseases: In closed environments where air conditioning systems are used pathogens can be circulated more easily among occupants. This can facilitate the spread of illnesses, particularly in crowded spaces such as offices or public transport systems.
4. Temperature Sensitivity: Prolonged exposure to artificially cooled environments can lead to a phenomenon known as “temperature sensitivity,” where individuals may become overly sensitive to temperature changes. This can result in discomfort when transitioning between outdoor heat and indoor coolness.
While air conditioning provides essential relief from heat and improves indoor air quality when properly maintained it is crucial to be aware of its potential negative health impacts. Regular maintenance of AC systems, monitoring indoor air quality, and ensuring adequate humidity levels can help mitigate these risks.As the world is  grappling with the dual challenges of rising temperatures and climate change alongwith health issues caused by overuseage of Air conditioning sustems.Balancing comfort with health considerations is the key in maximizing the benefits of air conditioning while minimizing their drawbacks.
By taking proactive steps to improve energy efficiency and reduce harmful emissions, we can enjoy the comfort of cool spaces while protecting our planet for future generations.
