Assam’s Covid-19 cases climb to 3,092

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) While 152 Covid-19 patients in Assam recovered from the disease on Wednesday, 155 people tested positive for the virus during the past 24 hours taking the state’s total cases to 3,092, health officials said.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a tweet, said that as cases increase in Assam, the responsibility is to be pro-active and more vigilant.

“Today, along with Minister of State Pijush Hazarika and MP Biswajit Daimary visited three containment zones in Guwahati and took stock of the current situation,” he added.

According to the Assam Health and Family Welfare Department, of the state’s 3,092 positive cases 1,834 are active cases. While health officials said five people, including a 16-years-old girl, have died of the virus in the state so far, Sarma attached a chart along with his tweet saying that six people died in the virus.

“We have no information about the death of the 6th person,” a senior health official told IANS over the phone.

As the number of Covid cases are rapidly rising, as many as 43 areas of the Guwahati city had been declared as containment zones, of which 24 areas were still sealed.

Assam has witnessed a surge in Covid-19 positive cases since inter-state movement of people began with around three lakh people returning to the state from western and south Indian states since May 4. Besides Assam, the spike in cases increasing on a regular interval in six other northeastern states — in Tripura (with positive cases rising to 897), Manipur (311), Nagaland (128), Mizoram (93), Arunachal Pradesh (57) and Meghalaya (44).
