Muhbeen Hussain’s MBE for “services to integration” is not merely undeserved—it is a profound insult to the victims of the Rotherham grooming scandal and undermines trust in British society. The evidence shows Hussain’s conduct has been divisive, reckless, and out of step with the values the honours system is meant to uphold.
Muhbeen Hussain
In 2015, amid public outrage following Rotherham’s child exploitation scandal, Hussain did not encourage unity or a spirit of accountability. Instead, he called on the Muslim community in Rotherham to boycott the police. He went further, demanding that Muslim individuals and organizations that refused to join this boycott be shunned by the wider community. This was no call for constructive protest or meaningful dialogue, but fuelled mistrust and widened the divide between communities and authorities.
Hussain has sought to justify his stance by blaming the police for “scapegoating” Muslims and failing to protect the community from far-right violence. But at a time when transparency, cooperation, and mutual understanding were urgently needed, he instead promoted disengagement from law enforcement. This move actively discouraged people from helping police or cooperating over serious crimes, and sent a damaging signal at a critical moment for community relations.

Robert Jenrick’s Condemnation
Robert Jenrick, a prominent Member of Parliament, has been especially forthright in his criticism. Reacting to footage of Hussain’s calls for a boycott, Jenrick stated:
“Muhbeen Hussain has been caught red handed calling for a Muslim boycott of the police in Rotherham. He should be stripped of his MBE [and] removed from his position on the APPG for British Muslims. His pernicious rants set back community cohesion—his award is a sick joke on the British public.”
Jenrick also described Hussain’s statements as “deranged rants” that form “an obstacle to integration,” insisting that keeping such an honour is a betrayal of the values of the British public and the memory of those failed by the system. His remarks reflect the growing public sentiment that someone who has so evidently deepened social divides and endangered trust in the law has no place being celebrated for fostering cohesion.
Conclusion
Britain’s honours is at times controversial but it means something—they should be reserved for those who genuinely serve the public good and promote unity, not for individuals who foster division at a time of crisis. By encouraging a breakdown of trust exactly when it was most needed, Hussain demonstrated precisely the opposite of the values the MBE is intended to reward. For the sake of justice, the victims, and the credibility of the honours system, Muhbeen Hussain’s MBE should be revoked immediately.
