The recent summit in New Delhi between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was much more than a routine diplomatic meeting. It resulted in concrete actions that directly challenge China’s economic and strategic dominance in the Indo-Pacific, triggering a sharp and public warning from Beijing.
What truly upset China was the focus on economic security and supply chains. Currently, China holds a near-monopoly on global rare earth elements and critical minerals. At the summit, India and Japan signed a landmark pact to build alternative, resilient supply networks for these minerals and semiconductors. By combining Japanese investment with Indian manufacturing power, the two nations are actively working to break China’s resource chokehold.
Furthermore, the leaders openly criticized “economic coercion” and “arbitrary export restrictions”—a direct swipe at Beijing’s habit of using trade as a political weapon. Combined with a new deal to co-develop naval surveillance hardware and Japan’s firm stance on regional security, the summit signaled a unified resistance to Chinese assertiveness in the region.
Ultimately, China’s angry reaction proves that this partnership is working. India and Japan have moved past vague pleasantries and are now building a practical, well-funded counterweight to Beijing’s regional dominance.
