Suella Braverman, a practising Buddhist, was the United Kingdom’s Home Secretary from September 2022 to November 2023. She became well known for her strong views on immigration and her tough approach to dealing with people arriving in the UK illegally. She was also the local MP for Fareham and Waterlooville.

As Home Secretary, Braverman introduced the Illegal Migration Act 2023. This law aimed to stop people from arriving in the UK without permission, such as by crossing the English Channel in small boats. It gave the Home Office more powers to detain such people and send them to a third country, like Rwanda, instead of allowing them to claim asylum in the UK. Critics said the law was too harsh and could leave many people stuck with no way to have their asylum claims heard.

She also strongly supported the Rwanda removals scheme, to see asylum seekers flown to Rwanda to have their claims processed there. However, legal challenges stopped any flights from taking place during her time in office.

Braverman was also responsible for changes to asylum seeker accommodation. She backed moving some people onto floating barges, such as the Bibby Stockholm, to ease pressure on hotels. This policy received criticism after an outbreak of illness forced an evacuation from the barge shortly after it opened.

In July 2025, she led and spoke at a large protest in Waterlooville against a Home Office plan to house asylum seekers in town centre flats. More than 1,000 people attended, with some estimates saying up to 2,000. She called the plans “outrageous” and “reckless,” saying they would put extra strain on local services and were the wrong choice for the community. She also accused the council and government of ignoring local concerns. Opponents criticised her for using the term “illegal migrants” when the people in question were in fact asylum seekers, and warned her words could increase fear and division.

After strong resistance from Braverman and local people, including over 10,000 signatures on her petition, the Home Office eventually dropped the housing plan. Braverman described this as a victory for “patriotic citizens” standing up for their community.

In conclusion, Suella Braverman’s record shows a clear and uncompromising stance on immigration, both in national government and in her local constituency. She introduced strict laws, supported offshore processing in Rwanda, trialled new ways of housing asylum seekers, and campaigned strongly against local accommodation plans in Waterlooville. While her supporters praised her for being firm and defending local interests, her critics accused her of being too harsh and using language that fuelled division.
She is slowly and gradually becoming people’s champion.
