Punjabi play, Lacchu Kabadia, stimulates minds to overcome caste based discrimination

(Samaj Weekly)- Chetna Association of Canada is pleased to announce its plans for hosting a Punjabi play, “Lacchu Kabadia”, on Sunday, July 23, at the North Delta Secondary School. The play is written, directed, and acted by a prominent visiting artist from Punjab, Dr. Sahib Singh.
Free admission is available with complimentary passes.
According to Singh, “The play is being well received by the audience. It serves as an educational tool to reassess the impact of the age-old caste system on the Indian Subcontinent, and more recently, across the globe. Everyone can relate to the topic of the play regardless of their position in the caste hierarchy”, says Singh.
“It also inspires people negatively impacted by the caste system to rise, be empowered, and break the shackles of the caste system and live a life of dignity”, continued Singh.
Dr. Singh has written, directed, and performed in many plays and short films. Naam Likhari Nanaka, Samey di Daang, and Gurpurab are just a few of the works of Singh.
In 2020, Singh was bestowed with the Shiromani Punjabi Natakkar Award, the highest award in this catwgory, by the Punjabi Languages Department (Punjab, India).
Issue of caste has recently come into public domain in North America when the City of Seattle passed in February 2023 ordinance to ban cast based oppression in public services. Similar motion was also passed in the State of California by the Senate. In Canada, Toronto District School Board, City of Burnaby, and City of Brampton have also motions on this topic. Discussions with the BC government are also in process to take measures on addressing caste related discrimination in the province.
