Since the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014 it has sought to make India an exclusive Hindu state. Mob-lynchings, rapes and murderous attacks on minorities, progressive forces and all those who dissent have become everyday occurrences and the occupation of Kashmir has turned to open colonialism. But now students, women, Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis, workers and farmers have risen up in unstoppable protests.
The measures which have sparked mass resistance are the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which together provide a pathway for ethnic cleansing.
The NRC demands that people provide documents to prove their citizenship, something impossible for many poor people. Meanwhile the CAA which violates India’s secular Constitution drafted by Dr B.R. Ambedkar offers Indian citizenship to non-Muslim minorities from neighbouring countries but excludes Muslims. The many Hindus caught in the snare of the NRC as ‘illegal’ are, in this way, offered citizenship, while Muslims are excluded. Also excluded are Tamils from Sri Lanka.
The protests have been followed by horrific state violence with Muslim neighbourhoods and homes invaded by police and fascist mobs, young men murdered, women, children and elderly people beaten up and tortured and protesting students in Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, JNU and elsewhere attacked with unspeakable violence. Meanwhile massive human rights abuses continue in Kashmir which remains under internet lockdown since its annexation by the Modi regime.
